The northern part of this county is characterized by a vast landscape of green hills, moors and stone walls. In between are numerous villages and hamlets with ancient houses built of grey stones, and in the heart the city of York, with an immense cathedral and atmospheric alleys from the 14th and 15th centuries. Just as impressive as the still intact country houses and abbeys are the beautiful ruins in the vicinity of York: among others Fountains Abbey, Helmsley Castle and Rievaulx Abbey. To the west are two cities that have grown big and rich through industry: Sheffield with steel and Leeds with wool. Both university cities are home to numerous museums that illustrate the rich history. There is a ferry between Hull on the Humber and Rotterdam, making Yorkshire easy to reach from the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
